WFMW: Household Odor Eliminator

Works-For-Me Wednesday, brought to you by Shannon at Rocks In My Dryer, gives us an opportunity to share tips, secrets, recipes, and a whole bunch of stuff for kids and adults of all ages ... Make sure you head on over to check out other great tips!

Several weeks ago, someone left the door to our outside freezer open. It was an accident ... I've been assured by that someone ... but in the process, stuff thawed, refroze, and then we had a freaky power surge of some kind that kicked the breaker for the freezer. We didn't realize that until there was mold growing, and odors emitting from the freezer. Nice.

Well, my hubby cleaned it out real well. He used a bleach-based product to kill the mold, we threw everything away, reset the plug, and closed the door, expecting the freezer to ... you know ... actually work. It didn't. We didn't set the right plug... and now, we had a clean freezer that was quite smelly.

Well, a long time ago, a friend of mine shared a tip that I thought I'd try out ... and surprisingly ... it worked.

I placed a small amount of coffee grounds (fresh, not previously used) in a container, placed the container in the freezer, and closed the door. Yes, the freezer was working again. And yes, the coffee grounds absorbed the odor.

So, when you have strange odors in your home, try placing a plate of coffee grounds out. It works for me!!

What a great idea! Thanks for sharing it. I wonder if it would work for icky day-old kitchen smells? You know, like those carmelized onions that tasted so good last night, but you don't wanna smell 'em this morning? I'm going to try this the very next time!

I am going to try this after cooking salmon. I love salmon but my husband hates when we have it because then the kitchen smells like fish for a couple of days.
