To Paint ... or NOT to Paint

I have a huge dilemma. I need your advice.

This is where you come out from lurking on my blog to actually ... leaving a comment.

I know that's a scary thing ... but you can do it. I know you can. I see how many read this blog daily, so I should at least have 5,483 comments.

Okay. Maybe 5.

Anyway -- here's my dilemma. I have to repaint my kitchen. The kitchen melts into the family room. I'm pretty sure my husband will NOT allow me to repaint the family room, as it has cathedral ceilings ... and ... well, you get the picture. the color needs to match, and all that good stuff.

So, we also want to replace the perfectly good counters we currently have... because when we first moved in, I'm not exactly sure what possessed us, but something in a spiritual, demonic and oppressive form came over us, and MADE us select a Formica counter top that was close to teal in color with all kinds of speckle-y, squiggly, line-y things on it.

Satan made us do it.

But now, we want a different color wall, and we're finding that NOTHING except what we currently have goes with it. And I really, REALLY want a green on the walls -- like a Broadleaf or Belladonna. Not teal. A real green. See samples below...

So -- the dilemma -- should I repaint the kitchen pretty much the same color? Or ... should I paint it a color that TOTALLY does NOT match the counter, and just wait it out until we replace the counter with a neutral color in a couple months?

What would you do? Did I make sense?

Can you see how the evil one made me choose teal?

When we lived in an apartment, our formica countertops in the bathroom and in the kitchen had been painted & textured. Maybe that would solve your problem temporarily? It was a pretty sturdy surface - not sure what kind of paint they used, but I'm sure Home Depot or Lowe's could tell you. Love the colors you're suggesting, though!

Good luck with the kitchen - projects are both fun and stressful. Hope it's more of the former for y'all. :)

I don't have any close up pictures of the cabinets right now and my camera is on the fritz, but I can tell you more about how we painted them. First we sanded them (make sure to get in the cracks as best as you can) and primed them with a latex primer (2 coats) - pretty sure it was Zapp Primer. Then we painted them with Olympic Gloss paint in Sarsaparilla (also 2 coats). We used a small foam roller to apply the paint and then went back over it with a brush to remove the tiny air bubbles that the roller left. For the most part it was pretty simple. The paint has chipped in 2 places, but both of them are where you can't see it unless the door is open and I'm not sure that chipping can completely be avoided.

Let me know if you have any other questions! Hope that helps. :)

And here is a link to the color we used: http://www.myperfectcolor.com/Match-of-Olympic-D33-6-Sarsaparilla-p/mpc0093796.htm

I'm kind of in the same boat as you. We desperately want to paint our kitchen, but it would mean overhauling the countertops which we can't do right now. So? Fear keeps me from doing anything.

I'm seriously contemplating painting our countertops.

Not any help, am I? I could almost live with fugly countertops and a great wall color at this point.

I'm the wrong person to ask about kitchen color. It took about 15 years for me to get a color I absolutely love. But it seems to me if you're replacing the counter in a few months, I'd just wait and match it to the new one. Why paint twice? IMHO of course. :v)

The devil can make people pick some pretty funky colors with all kinds of shapes and squggles to boot.

Let me tell you what one of my friends did to her "oh so ugly" formica!!! Easy and cheap - even better!!!

Collect plain ole brown paper grocery bags/sacks (depends on where you are from as to what you call those brown paper things you put groceries in). Anyway, tear the brown bags into 2-3 inch squares with torn edges, not cut. Make a mixture of watered down Elmer's glue. Dip paper pieces in it and layer them all over your "god awful teal stuff" and then when it is all covered, let it dry. Yes, it is brown paper bag glued to your counter tops.... Next, use a varnish/shellac and give it about 5 individual coats letting each dry completely in between coats. When it is done, it will look like shiny leather and is waterproof. We did this to some of our cabinet tops at the church too and it looks awesome. Give it a shot... what do you have to lose other than a bottle of glue and some varnish....... Plus, tearing those pieces of paper is great for STRESS!!!!!

I love the Broadleaf color for the wall.... as far as other questions.... ask Martha Stewart or someone from HGTV. I'm not much of a decorator, but really do like the green and love the sack countertop technique.

Good luck!!! I can't wait to see what you decide upon!!!!

Here I am, lurker extraordinaire, peeping in from my Google reader to actually leave a real, live comment. Guess it won't be "live" by the time you read it though. : )

I think the idea above is way cool and an inexpensive way to update a tired color like teal.

If you are committed to changing, I'd paint first so you don't get paint on your new counters. Just go pick out your new counter top color so you know which of those pretty greens will complement it the most. I like the broadleaf or the applejack best.

We need to chat again sometime. It's been WAY too long. : )

Love the green choices you put on here! All great, but I think my favorite is the Canopy Green...

...and I would totally jump right into it and just get to the counter tops later. I think you'll be glad you did! :)

Ooooooh, I love the Applejack colour and I was thinking with chrome knobs on your cabinet doors it would look FAB! (but maybe that's just me...it's what I want to do with my kitchen...someday)

Anyhoo, I'd totally paint now but pick out my countertops to match first. :)

Happy renovating!!

I'm no good at this stuff, but my first thought would be to go ahead and paint the color I want, then try to get new countertops later.

Paint your kitchen the color you love. It will be good motivation to continue on with your makeover, especially if this is what you can do now (financially, or time-wise).

It may not be as bad as you think, and guests will notice walls before counters.

Go with the color you want if you're replacing counters later anyway. Who cares if they don't match for a while!

And I have to laugh. Granny Smith Apple Green was one of the colors I came up with for the kitchen when Mr. Right told me no to a red kitchen. Somehow, I got through to him and have my red cooking room and I LOVE it. I'm sure I would have loved a green room too, though.

And for the record, that stupid satan makes us do all sorts of things we regret. Fortunately we have a God who heals us of all mistakes... even teal counters.

PAINT! Yes, yes, yes!!! AND the greens are lovely and will bring such LIFE to the place!

I personally love the Canopy Green as well!

Yes, paint. What are those green colors? I would not add those to teal ... I'd go with a light gray. Just my opinion though. But of course I'd need to see your countertop! :)
